Biosphere Reserves Institute Eberswalde
The Biosphere Reserves Institute (BRI) is a scientific institution made up of the three faculties; Forest and Environment, Landscape Management and Nature Conservation, and Sustainable Business at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). The main focus of the BRI is the UNESCO "Man and the Biosphere" program along with its designated model areas i.e. the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. In collaboration with BRI, HNEE intends to bring together the expert knowledge of all three faculties mentioned above.
The BRI is comprised of three pillars:
1. An international master’s degree in Biosphere Reserves Management (BIOM),
2. a graduate school specialised in scientific work relating to biosphere reserves (in cooperation with Leuphana University of Lüneburg) and
3. a research group responsible for the identification and funding of research projects on biosphere reserves.
The BRI realizes the Innovation and Career Center (IKC)’s "Biosphere focused process design for the implementation of biodiversity conserving land use (ProBio-LaB)", which as of April 2019 has been approved and funded by the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK). The aim of this initiative is to establish biosphere reserves as a research focus at HNE Eberswalde. The founding of the BRI occurred independently to the aforementioned funding and its work is set for the long term.
